Antonio Martínez
Biography
Antonio has an extensive professional and academic career with 27 years of experience in European and Competition Law, including all types of competition and merger control proceedings before the Spanish Competition Authority (Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia), Spanish Commercial Courts, European Commission and the European Court of Justice of the European Union.
Antonio is the author of numerous legal publications, a former member of the board of directors of the Spanish Association for the Defence of Competition, former vice secretary general of the Spanish Association for the Study of European Law (2008-2019) and of the Editorial Board of several legal publications. He is a professor on the Competition and European Law master’s degree course at the University of Carlos III of Madrid and he is also a professor of Competition Law at the Pharmaceutical Industry Programme at the IE Business School. He is an usual speaker in specialized fora. Antonio is recommended in legal directories such as Chambers & Partners, (every year since 2003 until today), Legal 500 and Practical Law Company.

Selected experience
- CNMC (Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission) has agreed to the termination by commitments (“terminación convencional”) of the sanctioning proceedings initiated in its day against Ecoembes for possible abuse of dominant position. We are very proud to have defended Ecoembes in these proceedings, in which Ecoembes has assumed the implementation of certain commitments and which has concluded without any declaration of infringement.
- Casli in CNMC’s infringement proceedings S/0008/21, Licitaciones Material Militar dealing with alleged bid rigging practices.
- Cepsa in the inspection of the CNMC for alleged abuse with the fuel discount.
- Hanson Hispania (the Spanish subsidiary of Heidelberg Materials) in its appeal before the Appeals Court (Audiencia Nacional) regarding the fines levied by the CNMC in case S/DC/0525/14, Cementos.
- Altadis in the appeal brought by the CNMC before the Spanish Supreme Court to try to overturn the Audiencia Nacional’s judgment that annulled the inspections carried out at Altadis’ premises.
